Abstract

The article presents an analysis of the narrative of the photo report “Chants and jumping over the fire: how the day of the summer solstice passed in Arkaim”, published in the online publication “Komsomolskaya Pravda”; its specificity is revealed. This photo report was chosen for analysis due to the fact that it has several qualities: it reflects an event that took place, was published in a well-known news publication, and was also taken by a professional photojournalist. This study has two main goals: to study the possibility of analyzing a photo report based on a well-known theoretical and methodological basis; identify the significance of the Arkaim nature reserve for people visiting it. The analysis consists of the following parts: examination of each photograph separately and the entire photo report as a whole. In the first case, we relied on the methodology of Gunter Kress and Theo van Leeuwen, described in the book Reading Images: A Grammar of Visual Design. In the second case, a study of a photo report based on the work of Algirdas Julius Greimas “Structural Semantics: Search for a Method.” The results obtained during this study made it possible to identify the main characters of the photo report, their relationship and goals. The main characters are people united by the desire to receive benefits (goal) from higher powers. This is exactly what they go to the Arkaim Nature Reserve for. A large number of guests is confirmation that this territory has “superpower” and “super capabilities” for those present. In the course of our research, the components of visual language were identified. In the future, the results of the work can help in studying the specifics of the Arkaim nature reserve and its visitors. And the research method proposed in the work can be extrapolated to the analysis of the features of narrative and other photo stories.
