Artificial Intelligence Policy

The editorial board of the journal “Znak: problemnoe pole mediaobrazovanija” adheres to principles of academic ethics and professional responsibility in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies throughout the process of article preparation, submission, peer review, and publication. Below are the main provisions of the journal’s policy regarding the use of AI tools.

For Authors

Use of Generative AI in Writing Academic Papers:

  • Generative AI may be used only to improve language and readability of the text (e.g., editing style, correcting grammar).
  • AI must be used under human supervision , and its outputs should be carefully reviewed and edited.
  • The author bears full responsibility for the content and accuracy of the information presented.

Disclosure of AI Use:

  • If generative AI or AI-assisted tools were used, this must be stated in the manuscript .
  • A disclosure statement will be published with the article and should include:
    • The purpose of using AI.
    • The type of technology employed.

AI Authorship:

  • AI cannot be listed as an author or co-author of an article.
  • Authorship is reserved for humans only, as it implies legal responsibility and professional accountability.

Use of AI in Images and Graphics:

  • The use of AI to generate or alter images, graphs, diagrams, or other illustrations in manuscripts is prohibited .
  • Minor adjustments such as brightness, contrast, or color balance are acceptable if they do not change the meaning or interpretation of the image.

Exception:
If AI is part of the research methodology (e.g., data visualization using neural networks), then:

  • Its use must be clearly described in the "Methods" section.
  • Include the model name, version, and software manufacturer.
  • Provide original, unedited images upon request.

Creation of Artistic Materials:

  • The use of generative AI for graphical abstracts is prohibited.
  • AI-generated materials may be used for cover design with the editor's permission, provided:
    • Image rights are respected.
    • The source is credited.

For Reviewers

Confidentiality:

  • Manuscripts and review reports are confidential documents.
  • Do not upload manuscripts, excerpts, or review reports into generative AI tools to avoid breaches of confidentiality and copyright.

Use of AI in Peer Review:

  • The use of generative AI or AI-based technologies for manuscript analysis is strictly prohibited.
  • Peer review requires critical thinking and expert judgment, which current AI systems cannot fully replicate.
  • Reviewers bear personal responsibility for the quality and objectivity of their reviews.

Reviewing Disclosures about AI Use:

  • If the author has used AI in preparing the manuscript, this will be indicated in a dedicated section before the reference list.
  • This disclosure helps reviewers understand the context and make an informed evaluation decision.
