Mass media influence on the formation of the urban environment (by the example of Tambov province)

Abstract

The article is devoted to the issues of the media sphere influence on urban processes. The purpose of the article is to analyze how the media became an important factor in the formation of the urban environment and new behavioral practices that determined the cultural appearance of Russian society in the twentieth century. The study examines the historical context of media urbanism and highlights the influence of private publications in a provincial town on the formation of a new type of modern society - the industrial type. The article highlights elements of the communication and information infrastructure that are attributes of city life and influence the development of the mass communication environment, ensuring the functioning of the media system. It is also concluded that the emerging urban media played an important role in the development of the social and cultural environment of the Russian province. The research material was the press of the Tambov province in the first two decades of the twentieth century, during the period of active formation of private periodicals in large and small cities of the Russian province. Examples from the social, cultural, educational spheres of life in the region, reflected on the pages of pre-revolutionary periodicals, are considered. The work used general scientific and special methods, for example, comparative historical and problem-chronological, as well as methods for studying archival documents and analyzing media texts. This article provides relevant material for studying the historical content of media urbanism in its socio-philosophical meaning.
