The pre-revolutionary newspaper Severny Kavkaz as a «literaturogenny» phenomenon

The purpose of the study was to determine the "literaturogenny" of the first private newspaper in the region Severny Kavkaz (Stavropol, 1884–1906), which led to the following research questions: What semantic dominants were singled out by Severny Kavkaz when presenting fiction to the reading audience? What place did fiction occupy and what function did it perform in the program and structure of the newspaper Severny Kavkaz? Has newspaper become an organizer of the literary process for writers and poets in the region?
An analysis of literary criticism in the newspaper Severny Kavkaz led to the conclusion that fiction, literary figures, and literary processes were evaluated throughout the publication's existence in accordance with its information policy, which in the 1880s and 1890s focused on social issues, and in the early 20th century on socio-political issues, while the editorial staff consistently maintained a democratic stance.
The results of the study show that when presenting fiction to their readers, the journalists of Severny Kavkaz emphasized its social service, and the newspaper actively promoted writers and poets who contributed to the growth of public awareness in Russian society by raising issues of the people's lack of rights and the need to fight for individual freedom.
The editorial board was guided by these requirements when publishing literary texts in the newspaper, giving preference to civic poetry, literary satire, socially oriented prose, and drama.
The editorial board of the newspaper, by involving writers and poets not only from Stavropol but also from other regions of the North Caucasus, promote to the development of the literary talents of beginner authors and regional literature in general. Throughout its existence, the newspaper Severny Kavkaz has served as a platform for the self-realization of democratic-minded writers and poets in the region.
