Abstract

In this article, considering the COVID-19 pandemic as a trigger for media changes, the author speaks of new challenges of the time that defy unambiguous estimates. In a brief excursion into the history of the development of mass communication, it is noted that their appearance was associated with various social and political changes, among which epidemics, mass diseases and viruses played one of the primary roles.

Based on the results of in-depth interviews with employees of regional and federal media, the author presents the changes that have affected various aspects of the media industry, from the editorial team management system to approaches to organizing the production process. The article notes new formats and technologies in the work of journalists. The conclusion from the study is the assertion that all changes in the media are ambiguous.

Along with the positive trends associated with the transfer of media to the online format, which significantly increases the efficiency of information dissemination, the article notes negative trends such as: restriction of freedom of speech and the difficulty of journalists in fulfilling their professional duties, self-censorship, the withdrawal of advertisers from the regional media market, which affected the economics of publications. Based on the analysis, the author comes to the conclusion that all the changes in the media caused by the COVID-19 pandemic were launched a long time ago, and the pandemic only accelerated this process. There has been a real revolution in the digitalization of media.
