Abstract

The article analyzes the media construction of meanings that form the image of Chelyabinsk and its twin city Columbia, South Carolina, the USA. The data are collected from the electronic versions of local newspapers and social networks. Media construction is defined as an interactive process of sharing media logic in which user-generated content complements the context of news. Using frame analysis, we identified frames as models that process media construction of meanings. The dominant frames in Russian and English media discourses were ‘economic impact and consequences’, ‘fairness and equality’. The predominance of these frames is determined by salience as the emphasis on certain aspects of an event / issue in a news text using lexical means. This article confirmed the hypothesis that negative connotations increase the salience.
