Abstract

Fact-checking is an important part of the editorial processes. The article considers approaches to the definition of "fact-checking" and "information verification". Meanwhile, in journalism has not yet fully developed a unified approach to the definition of "fact". One of the opinions is to consider information that has passed the verification test as a fact.

There are several directions in media research. Journalists use fact-checking as a tool to prepare stories. Also, fact-checking is a part of the final process at the stage of information gathering. When checking facts, journalists may have difficulties: lack of time or skills, lack of standards for fact-checking in editorial board.

Attention is paid to the problem of checking facts from social networks. A separate group of studies consists of works devoted to data journalism, where fact-checking requires special knowledge and technological skills from a journalist. Most researchers understand fact-checking as an ethical and technological mechanism. There is a demand from the industry to develop specific rules for fact-checking, which should be based on the basic principles of journalism.
