Abstract

The subject of the article is possible methodological approaches to identifying, analyzing, and interpreting phobias in contemporary regional media texts in a rhetorical aspect. The need for this is due to the need to find an integrated approach to describing rhetorical strategies for representing phobias in media texts. The rhetorical approach to the phenomena of media practice is significant and relevant for a number of reasons: 1) both rhetoric and the media have the main goal-setting impact on the addressee's opinion and coordinate system, 2) there is a general “rhetorical turn” of modern culture, 3) the picture of the world is being transformed from literary-centric to media-centric. Media are perceived as a translator of certain value attitudes and emotional assessments, on the one hand, and a resource for the formation and crystallization of these attitudes, on the other, and this process is designed for different aspects of the interaction of the very subjects of communication. Focusing on the subject of our research, we can say that media text both reflects and forms social phobias among content consumers. Phobia (a concept in the broadest common sense denoting a symptom, a phenomenon based on irrational uncontrollable fear or consisting in a permanent anxiety about certain objects or situations) seems to be an important and significant factor in the process of forming lines of social tension and creating a social and psychological portrait of the inhabitants of the region.
