The article examines an updating of an ideological approach in foreign media education. The media concepts “ideology” and “dominant ideology” are considered in the diachronic aspect.
The review of the e-journal "Teaching Media Quarterly" is presented in order to identify the theoretical backgrounds, main topics of lesson plans, and methods of analyzing of media texts. The thematic distinctiveness is defined: discrimination, gender, race, social class, age, justice, solidarity, equality. Ideological approach deals with identity and semiotic opposition “in group – out group”.
It was also shown that the ideological approach is often used with the critical and protectionist ones, because they are united by the search for answers to the questions: 1) whose interest does the information serve? 2) Whose values (re) produces? 3) What are the value orientations of the world created by media? 4) How is the required impact achieved? 5) How to resist the communicative influence?
There are links between ideological approach, critical media literacy, democracy, social participation in politics and citizenship education.
