Peculiarities of representation of social problems of the city in media discourse

The article analyzes the peculiarities of media representation of social problems in the city of Chelyabinsk on the example of the Facebook social network. This research aims to reveal discursive mechanisms of “portraying” urban reality of the capital of the South Urals. The news website “Our Chelyabinsk”, presented on the Facebook page, is used as a source of practical material. This is an official city community, uniting more than 200 thousand active citizens. The page of the website “Our Chelyabinsk” publishes current city news, weather, a poster of Chelyabinsk and information about the most important city events. Complex analysis, combining quantitative and qualitative pragmalinguistic and linguocognitive methods and techniques, allows identifying effective ways of media presentation of information in social media on verbal and non-verbal levels. User content, presented on the page of the website “Our Chelyabinsk” in the form of text, video, images, reviews and comments, forms the image of the city through the prism of attitude of Chelyabinsk residents to the events taking place in the city. The material of the news resource “Our Chelyabinsk” creates an urban portrait of the city through the reference to the problems of the city – environmental problems, incidents of criminal nature and historical facts.
