The topicality of the study is due to modern socio-cultural challenges and the constant interest of domestic and foreign scientists in the topic of Patriotism and the Media.
The study aimed to specify the most significant ways of actualizing the idea of patriotism in the information space of the North Caucasus. It involved a number of tasks: to identify the peculiarities of the information agenda in the regional media discourse on patriotism; to consider within the framework of critical discourse analysis the choice of actors of a discursive event and the study of discursive strategies in terms of their categorization and nomination; to determine the interpretation and basis of patriotism and the heroes who represent it in media texts. The source base of the study included 3832 patriotism-related media texts selected using the media database and the contextual search system of the information and analytical system Medialogy over three months (from April 1 to June 30, 2023).
It has been specified that the main emphasis in the information agenda related to patriotism in the information space of the North Caucasus is placed on the representation of patriotic practices, including those thematically related to the North Caucasus Military District. The second most common reason for including the concept of patriotism in the information agenda was the speech of officials. Such a choice of social actors by the media certainly allows broadcasting the position of the authorities, but at the same time is not sufficient to form and reflect the public opinion. Opinion leaders’ point of view (religious figures, prominent scientists, athletes, people of culture, etc.) is poorly represented, and ordinary citizens are represented sporadically.
The study showed that the media of the North Caucasus Federal District most often saw the Great Victory and episodes of the Great Patriotic War as reasons for patriotism, and the heroes representing Russian patriotism were participants and veterans of the Great Patriotic War.
