Russian media on the 190th anniversary of the Decembrist revolt

The purpose of this article is to analyze the content of Russian mass media materials dedicated to the 190th anniversary of the Decembrists’ revolt that took place in 2015. In compliance with this, the author analyzes different media with different ideological backgrounds and compares the 2015’s with the 1925’s materials. The methodology of the research is based on studying the materials of the periodical press devoted to historical events in view of the time of these materials’ publication and the contemporary political situation. The analysis covers both changes in views of Soviet and Russian authors to the Decembrists and changes in the media’s operating model. For example, all mass media of the USSR were state-owned and worked as a mouthpiece of the Party and the state machinery, whereas the situation in the Russian Federation is different. Conditionally Russian media of the mid-2010s. can be divided into pro-government media (in this research are represented by Kultura TV channel, RIA Novosti news agency and Gazeta.ru), neutral media (in this research are represented by Nezavisimaya Gazeta and news agencies Regnum and EADaily), oppositional media (in this research are represented by Ogonyok magazine, Novaya Gazeta, which was admitted in 2021 as a foreign agent media, RBK news agency). As a result of the study, it can be concluded that the attitude to the Decembrists in the middle of 2010s, as well as in 19-20 cent., still illustrates the ideological split within society and doesn’t illustrate the Decembrists by themselves.
