Abstract

Analyzing contemporary science films research, the author draws attention to the problem of the diversity of artistic means in modern science cinema, using mainly documentary techniques (observation, interviewing, reportage) and rarely resorting to artistic methods and complex visual concepts. The author also explores the possibilities of combination of fiction and non-fiction elements in the science cinema, as well as the application of the «postdoc» method.

The relevance of the topic is due to its insufficient knowledge. «Postdoc» is a term that appeared not so long ago; there is no single definition of it in the literature. «Postdoc» is considered both as a phenomenon that arose in the era of post-truth and is associated primarily with our perception of documentary material, and as an artistic method: a combination of fiction and non-fiction material in a documentary or science cinema.

The object of the study is short films created in the experimental Laboratory of Scientific Cinema, made by directors in different genres and combined in film collection. The subject of the study is directorial methods, including the combination of documentary and staging in these films. The author also analyzes, using a questionnaire, the audience preferences that arise during viewing of the film collection. As a result, the following conclusions are formulated: 1) the «postdoc» method in science cinema allows directors to expand the palette of expressive means and give films a genre coloring, without depriving them of scientific authenticity 2) when viewers watch and compare science films, they give preference to films having understandable formats and genres, the viewers also pay attention to the visual concept.
